چکیده

The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) is designed for packet switched data transmission and is a mean of mobile access to packet data networks, e.g. the Internet. Packet switched transmission is inherently better suited for bursty traffic as it is generated by typical Internet applications primarily WWW, FTP and e-mail. A simulator is presented showing the performance of GPRS for accessing TCP/IP based applications in the Internet. Performance will be evaluated from the point of end-user perception as well as from a network operator’s perspective. The results will demonstrate that GPRS is well suited for accessing Internet services in GSM.

A Performance Evaluation of Internet Access via the General Packet Radio Service of GSM

The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is currently being standardized by the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) to extend the services provided by the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). GPRS is dedicated to support packet-oriented traffic, e.g. Internet traffic. Packet oriented transmission is by nature better suited to convey bursty traffic, as it is generated ...

GSM Phase 2+ General Packet Radio Service GPRS: Architecture, Protocols, and Air Interface

The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a new bearer service for GSM that greatly improves and simplifies wireless access to packet data networks, e.g., to the Internet. It applies a packet radio principle to transfer user data packets in an efficient way between mobile stations and external packet data networks. This tutorial gives an introduction to GPRS. The article discusses the system a...

Throughput and buffer analysis for GSM General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)

The Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Phase 2+ standard specifies a new type of packet data service called General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). GPRS allows the dynamic allocation of bandwidth resources. Wireless channels are allocated to a mobile terminal based on its traffic demands. Thus results in better resource utilization compared to the circuit-based data services. In general...

Resource Allocation for Interactive Traffic Class over Gprs

The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a new bearer service for GSM that greatly simplify wireless access to packet data networks, e.g., to the Internet, to the corporate LAN or to the mobile portals. It applies a packet radio standard to transfer user data packets in a well-organized way between Mobile Stations (MS) and external packet data networks. The introduction of guaranteed performa...

Differentiated Services in the GPRS Wireless Access Environment

The General Packet Radio Service extends the existing GSM mobile communications technology by providing packet switching and higher data rates in order to efficiently access IP-based services in the Internet. Even though Quality-of-Service notions and parameters are included in the GPRS specification, no realization path for Quality-of-Service support has been proposed. In this paper we adapt t...
